Nigeria: Child support grant for female children launched

The government of Nigeria, along with UNICEF and Department for International Development (DFID) launched a child support grant in Sokoto state in northern Nigeria. The grant aims to encourage and support female children to attend school. Low enrolment and completion of school are major problems in Nigeria, especially with female children. About 10.5 million children are out of school, mostly girls. The grant is expected to help pay for textbooks and school-related costs. It amounts to 5,000 naira or US$31 paid every quarter to girls in the 6-15 age group.
