STEP Portugal supports Cape Verde in extending social protection

STEP Portugal, a Programme executed by the ILO Social Security Department and financed by Portugal, offers support to the Governments of African Portuguese-speaking countries for the extension of social protection and the strengthening of its effectiveness. It mainly supports public institutions that are responsable for contributory and non-contributory social protection in these countries.

In Cape Verde, STEP Portugal has been working over the past years with the National Social Security Institute (INPS) to strengthen and extend social insurance coverage, by reinforcing INPS capacity in terms of quantitative management and the extension of coverage to the self-employed, domestic workers and workers in micro and small enterprises.

It has also been cooperating with the National Social Pensions Centre (CNPS) in the establishment of a unified system of non-contributory social pensions for the elderly, disabled and invalid people as well as children with disabilities in poor families.
