India: Govt to deploy 10,000 `barefoot technicians' to run MNREGA

Stung by a shortage of engineers to spearhead its infrastructure development and employment guarantee programmes in the villages, the Union government is planning to train youngsters from backward communities in basic civil engineering to assess the works done under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. The Union Ministry for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj plans to start the training programme this month itself in association with the International Labour Organisation.
