With the full operationalization of the Indonesian workers’ social security agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) on July, 1, 2015, Indonesia is taking  major steps toward the full implementation of law No.40/2004 concerning the national social security system which mandates the design and implementation of five social insurance programmes (Universal Social Health Insurance, Provident Fund, Pension, Work injury and death benefit) for all Indonesian citizen. A new public pension plan for private sector workers has been launched, and the Work-injury programme extended to a Return-To-Work programme.

In order to learn from others countries' experience in reforming their social security systems to address the global, regional and national challenges, but also share its own experience, BPJS Ketenagkerjaan organized an international seminar on 19-20 August 2015 in Bali, Indonesia.

The keynote speaker of the seminar, Mr. Errol Frank Stoové, President of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), summarized the work done under ISSA megatrend project (labour market trends, climate change and natural resource scarcity, demographic developments and society and family changes) and highlighted positive examples of members who have taken strong actions to address the current challenges.

This two-day seminar gave the opportunity to participants from various countries and institutions to present and discuss their practices under the seminar theme, and for Indonesia to present its recently launched return-to-work programme.
