Linking social protection and rural development in Myanmar

This Tuesday 7 July, the ILO Liaison Officer in Myanmar, Mr Steve Marshall, intervened in the panel discussion organized by the World Bank and the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development "Building resilience, equity and opportunity in Myanmar: the role of social protection". Mr Marshall underlined the need and benefits for social protection tools to be mainstreamed in the country's rural development framework to achieve inclusive growth. He also underlined the role of social protection floors in enhancing resilience and social cohesion, which are crucial elements in a fragile and post-conflict setting and a central element in achieving an internationally endorsed human right. In that respect, social protection is a key component of Myanmar transition process.
