Summary (English)

The social security law was passed in 2010 as a temporary provision and is currently being reviewed and awaits its ratification by the parliament.

Through this legislation the social security coverage was extended to workers in small enterprises (below 5 employees), self-employed, and agriculture workers, and introduced a new maternity and unemployment insurances which are now being phased-in.

This law refers to all the workers of the formal sector ‘[...} not under 16 years of age, without any discrimination as to nationality, and regardless of the duration or form of contract [...]’ (Social Security Corporation, 2010). It stipulates the benefits to which, based on their employment and contributions made by the workers or on their behalf by their employers, the insured are entitled.

Social security is administered by the Social Security Corporation and dates back to 1978 when the first Social Security Law was implemented to protect workers The existing social security schemes include old-age, disability, and survivor pensions (defined benefit), work injury allowances and health service benefits, maternity benefits, and unemployment benefits. In addition to extending the benefits of the social security system, through the temporary law of 2010 curtailed the early retirement.
