The NGO Committee for Social Development at the UN is collecting signatures in support of a Social Protection Floor for all. This petition asks all governments to ensure that all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, have access to basic income security and services (such as food, education and health care). What is a social protection floor?

Social protection floors are nationally defined sets of basic social security guarantees that should ensure, as a minimum that, over the life cycle, all in need have access to essential health care and to basic income security which together secure effective access to goods and services defined as necessary at the national level.

FILM: A social protection floor for all

Implementing social protection floors is even more urgent during times of economic crisis. In 2009, the UN adopted the SPF Initiative as one of its nine joint initiatives to cope with the effects of the economic crisis. Individual countries are already taking steps to make it happen. This film presents 4 country experiences: Argentina, India, Nambia and Thailand.
