Description
Ethiopia has enacted the National Social Protection Policy (NSPP) in November 2014 to serve as a framework to harmonize and standardize the implementation of social protection programs in the country. To contribute to a comprehensive, sustainable and well-coordinated social protection system, the European Union has initiated and financed a Project on ‘Improving synergies between Social Protection (SP) and Public Finance Management (PFM)’. Ethiopia is one of the eight countries selected to take part in this program along with Angola, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Nepal, Paraguay, Senegal, Uganda . The project is to be jointly implemented by ILO and UNICEF in Ethiopia.
The project in Ethiopia has the objective of improving the SP system for the country through improved sustainable financing. It aims at achieving this through three focus areas:

- Financing strategy for Social Protection in Ethiopia with short-term and medium-term options
- Extending social security to informal economy workers and supporting wage legislation related to social protection.
- Building the capacity of MoLSA to effectively monitor the social protection system
