Description
Suriname is highly dependent on natural resources such as gold, timber, oil, and gas. The country’s Multi-Year Development Plan 2022-2026 envisions an economy and society less reliant on natural resource exploitation with a just transition towards environmentally sustainable economy. This intervention is a targeted response to the need for a more sustainable, productive, and formal economy that generate new jobs and enterprises, and pro-climate growth, as expressed in the country’s third Decent Work Country Programme (2023-2026). The intervention takes place in rural and interior areas of Suriname. Target groups comprise the most disadvantaged populations, including maroon and indigenous populations based in the districts of Brokopondo, Saramacca and Coronie. Special emphasis is placed on promoting gender equality in identified sectors. The expected results of the intervention include: a) improved capacity of ILO constituents to formulate and implement policies that support a just transition and formalization, in identified sectors and value chains; b) transition of targeted Surinamese micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to formality; and c) supportive local and regional governments and community leaders to drive just and formal transition in their territories.Time
