Outcome summary

An action plan on developping a compensation system covering occupational diseases and inuries has been adopted

Outcome achieved

The government adopted an Issues Paper on occupational diseases and injuries compensation systems in September 2020. The action plan has been adopted following the consultation of a tripartite. The action plan adapts ILO principles to include social insurance based compensation system moving from employer liability, ‘no fault system’, periodic payment system, tripartite governance system

ILO's contribution to the outcome

With the support from Joint SDG Fund on Social Protection (KEN19/52/UND) and other resources, the ILO supported the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services to convene a high level dialogue forum in September 2020 on the establishment of an occupational diseases and illness compensation system through social insurance, the subsequent tripartite committee meetings (October 2020 to June 2021) to develop the issues paper/action plan and technical memorandum on the establishment of the compensation fund and provided technical inputs and guidance during this consensus building processes.

CPO deliverables linked to P&B output 8.1 include HIV and Disability responsive social protection to enhance the inclusion of these vulnerable groups in mainstream schemes and towards supporting maternity income protection.
