Maternity Protection training for labour and legal inspectors of Trade Unions, the Republic of Tajikistan, Kairakum, 15-16 June 2017

On 15-16 June 2017, the ILO conducted the “Maternity protection and Gender Dimension on Social Security” training for regional labour and legal inspectors of Trade Unions in Sogd region (Kairakum), Tajikistan.

The participants have learnt international labour standards in maternity protection area and international practises, the majority of which are about ILO Convention no. 183 and best operational excellence practices. The training was delivered by the international and national trainers Ms. Kairgul Sadybykasova and Ms. Saera Ashrapova and facilitated by Mr. Artiom Sici (ILO Social protection officer in Tajikistan) as an efficient and entertaining simulation.

The ILO official mentioned that “The maternity protection has two main goals (1) to ensure that a woman’s economic activities do not pose risks to the health of the woman and her child, and (2) to ensure that women’s reproductive roles do not compromise the economic security of their households. Maternity protection at work encompasses a host of different components ranging from maternity leave, health protection and non-discrimination to social protection and breastfeeding."

The simulation gave to the participants the idea of importance of the maternity protection – from its extension to defending the workers rights at workplace. They have also learnt how to assess national law and practice, comparison of the Tajik national system and international standards. Group work facilitated cooperation and interaction among labour and legal inspectors, which are crucial for exchanging of ideas and solutions on different challenges.
