REGIONAL COURSE ON EXTENDING SOCIAL PROTECTION COVERAGE, 9-12 OCTOBER 2017

LEARNING ABOUT THE MOST ADVANCED THINKING AROUND CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES FOR EXTENDING SOCIAL PROTECTION, SHARING INFORMATION ON GOOD AND BAD PRACTICES, AND ADAPTING LESSONS LEARNT TO SPECIFIC COUNTRY CONTEXTS.

Bintaro, Indonesia, 9 - 12 October 2017

The training course was organized by the International Training Center of the ILO (ITC ILO) in partnership with the ILO/Japan Project "Extending Social Security Coverage in ASEAN".

The course proposed policy makers and practitioners working towards extending social protection to all to learn from the internationally agreed concepts and principles, as well as practices and innovations for extending social protection, in particular to workers in the informal economy. The course is part of the ILO/ASEAN Project on Extending Social Security Coverage in ASEAN, funded by the Government of Japan that aims at building knowledge, understanding and enhancing expertise on extension of social security, and stimulate South-South cooperation across ASEAN Member States on this specific issue.

 

More specifically, the training achieved the following objectives:

  • Reviewed the concepts of social protection and informal economy, and the importance of the transition from the informal to the formal economy;
  • Identified challenges for extending social protection to workers in the informal economy;
  • Discussed strategies for extending social protection to workers in the informal economy;
  • Explored ways to transfer the learning back to their own work contexts.
