Summary (English)

Briefly explores how the Social Protection Floor (SPF) can contribute in developing countries, where the vast majority of rural populations that operate in the informal economy are unprotected, to support rural development and empower people to meaningfully participate in the development of their societies.

Cash or in kind benefits from SPF mechanisms, for instance, raise the incomes of poor households, helping them fulfill certain household needs. Such mecanisms also generate local consumption and create local economic multiplier effects in rural areas that often experience limited cash flows, thereby expanding domestic markets and promoting growth.
