The COVID-19 pandemic represents a major public health challenge and will have serious economic and social impacts. Governments are facing a double challenge: they have to contain the health pandemic, while at the same time responding to its economic and social impacts.

The crisis has once again called attention to the importance of ensuring universal access to social protection systems that provide comprehensive and adequate benefits that meet people’s needs.

This brief presents the main areas addressed by national social protection policy responses to the COVID-19 crisis and provides observations and policy recommendations derived by the crisis.
