The Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) is an association of Indian women working in the informal sector. Created in 1972, today it has more than 200,000 members. In 1991, SEWA launched a social protection system offering life insurance and health insurance. The document describes the context and the motivations at the origins of this social protection system. It also presents its operations and its evolution and undertakes a financial and institutional analysis of the scheme.
