Financial strategies for sustainable social protection systems
Financial governance is key to make social protection systems sustainable. Projecting costs in the long term and constitute an adequate social budget with the government and workers' and employers' representatives enables new or reformed programmes to function properly, and services and benefits to be allocated and distributed to change millions of lives.
The public finance, actuarial and statistics branch of the ILO Social Protection Department offers recognized services for the nine social security branches such as the employment injury insurance. Through projections, analysis and recommendations built on ILO standards, the branch supports governments that want to assess the implementation costs of new systems (e.g. pensions) and to improve existing ones. The branch advises states on how to fund planned measures. It also strengthens administrations’ capacities through training staff and providing practical tools that support decision-making.
