Description
Since the launch of the National Social Protection Policy in 2014, Zambia has embarked on an ambitious journey of building and strengthening an inclusive and efficient social protection system to protect and promote decent standards of living for all Zambians throughout their lifecycle. Social Protection has become a key priority in the national and international development agenda, calling for the coordination and engagement of multiple stakeholders, government agencies and the active participation of civil society, representatives of workers and employers, cooperating partners and the academia. ILO initiated the SPIREWORK Zambia project in collaboration with the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) and invited the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and other Finnish institutions into the partnership. The overall approach of the project is to support ongoing social security reform processes in development of contributory social protection in Zambia, especially targeting the informal and rural economy workers, in line with the African Union strategy on the extension of “SPIREWORK” (Social Protection for Informal and Rural Economy Workers), and the AU Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).SDG

- Reduce inequality within and among countries
Targets
- 1.3 Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable
