The Joint WHO-ILO publication provides guidance on social protection for people affected by tuberculosis

New guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) on social protection for people affected by tuberculosis highlights the essential role of social protection as an integral part of the fight against the TB epidemic, as well as the way forward for practitioners and policy-makers in national TB programmes.

The new technical guidance aims to serve as both the conceptual and operational tools for member states, social partners, civil society organizations and other stakeholders to secure adequate social protection for people affected by TB.

It was developed as part of the multisectoral response to end TB, based on the coordinated and accountable effort of actors within and beyond the health sector, as advised in the Multisectorial Accountability Framework TB.

The technical guidance underlines the urgent need to close social protection coverage gaps and to take into consideration the public health impact of national social protection systems and policies.
