The Permanent Missions to the United Nations of Nepal and Portugal, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) are pleased to convene a side-event to the ECOSOC, 63rd session of the Commission for Social Development, entitled Realizing the right to social security: ensuring the sustainable and equitable financing of social protection.

The side event will mark the launch of a joint publication by OHCHR and ILO : Right to Social Security (Fact Sheet No. 39). This publication provides the content and key elements of the right to social security in line of the human rights treaties and national constitutions and systematized by ILO Conventions and Recommendations. It also provides guidance for extending social security coverage through the establishment of comprehensive social protection systems for all, in line with international human rights treaties and international social security standards and as a central component of sustainable development.

With only five years left to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, this event will provide an opportunity to discuss the key role of realizing the human right to social security in addressing emerging issues related to social resilience and development, with a special emphasis on the sustainable and equitable financing of social protection systems. It will also enhance understanding on the challenges that social security systems can help to address, highlighting their impact on vulnerable groups, as well as provide guidance for expanding coverage in line with international human rights instruments and international social security standards.
