Summary (English)

Housed at the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Microinsurance Innovation Facility seeks to increase the availability of quality insurance for the developing world’s low-income families to help them guard against risk and overcome poverty.

Launched in 2008 with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Facility aims to learn how insurance can best benefit low-income households. It achieves this mission by stimulating innovation, contributing to the development of valuable products, promoting models that reach large volumes of clients and by supporting market education to help low-income people understand the utility of insurance. Concretely the Facility provides grants to microinsurance providers and delivery channels, supports the development of their capacities, works with a wide range of partners to document their experiences on the ground, publishes and disseminates good practices and lessons learnt and enables a dynamic dialogue amongst the different players.

The Facility expects the results of this work to contribute to helping millions of low-income people make informed choices on how to manage risk and gain access to a wider range of insurance products that provide better value for money.
