Summary (English)

This note briefly explains how basic social protection – through national social protection floors – can allow countries to extend social coverage to their population, and ensure the sustainability of their systems in a context of crisis and fiscal constraints. It provides an overview of social protection policy measures worldwide, with specific examples towards a social protection floor approach.

It also stresses the leading role the G20 could play in G20 countries and low-income countries to make further concrete progress with the introduction of national social protection floors. To this end, the Social Protection Floor Advisory Group, chaired by Ms. Michelle Bachelet, addresses the G20 a series of recommendations listed in this note.
