Summary (English)

The paper reviews the regulation of the South African insurance industry. It provides andaccount of some interesting developments in the industry that are likely to becomeincreasingly significant in other countries if the microinsurance industry continues to grow.The paper argues that for the most part microinsurance in South Africa consists of funeral insurance, although the author provides an account of the emergence of a range of microinsurance products that are targeted at household enterprises, including hire-purchase insurance.
