Summary (French)

Microinsurance has become a 'hot' topic in the development community, prompting increasing numbers of microfinance institutions to enter this market. However, offering insurance products entails taking on a number of new risks for MFIs, an already somewhat fragile industry. To offset these risks, MFIs should focus on forming partnerships with regulated insurers through which they can offer clients an insurance product adapted for the micro market. Already, major international and national insurers have shown a keen interest in accessing this market through MFIs. In such partnerships, the insurer maintains the insurance risk and the MFI provides sales and basic services for the products.
