Summary (English)

In West and Central Africa, mutual health insurance schemes are still relatively new and few in number. However, they are rapidly growing. Nevertheless, in this region, as elsewhere in Africa, the mutual insurance movement needs a conducive environment and adequate technical support to further develop in an appropriate manner. The Abidjan Platform presents an ensemble of ideas and principles to create efficient and coherent support strategies for organizations involved in mutual insurance schemes. The Abidjan Platform is the result of a collective reflection by various types of actors involved in the promotion of mutual insurance schemes, who came together during a workshop held in Abidjan in June 1998. This workshop was jointly organized by the ILO (Regional Office for Africa/STEP/ACOPAM), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and its programme "Partnership for Health Reform" (PHR), the German Technical Development Agency (GTZ), the National Alliance of Christian Mutual Aid of Belgium (ANMC) and the NGO World Solidarity Movement (WSM).
