Background
This event aims to increase awareness regarding the crucial role of universal social protection systems in fostering a just transition. The event will showcase specific country cases on how social protection can help countries transitioning to environmentally sustainable economies and societies in a way that leaves no one behind.
A Just transition means transitioning to environmentally sustainable economies and societies in a way that reduces poverty and promotes decent work for all. Universal social protection is key for supporting this goal whether it is by reducing people’s vulnerability to climate risks, by helping them adapt their livelihoods or by cushioning people against the negative socioeconomic impacts of policies aimed at reducing emissions and protecting the environment.
