ASEAN Trade Union's Statement on Strengthening Social Protection

Place: Phnom Penh, Cambodia
On 27 September 2014, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the ASEAN Trade Unions adopted a joint statement on social protection. It responds to the adoption of the ASEAN Declaration on Strengthening Social Protection by the ten Leaders of the ASEAN member States, on 9 October 2013, in Brunei Darussalam. It also includes concrete actions and identifies the role of the trade unions for an effective implementation of the ASEAN Declaration and the ILO’s Social Protection Floors Recommendation, 2012 (No.202).
The ASEAN Trade Unions’ Statement will be presented at the tripartite ASEAN seminar to review and validate the draft zero of the Plan of Action for the implementation of the ASEAN Declaration, 17-18 November 2014, Bangkok, Thailand.

About the workshop
The workshop, co-organized by the ASEAN Trade Union Congress, the Cambodia Labour Confederation and the ASEAN-ILO/Japan Project on Promoting and Building income security and employment services in ASEAN, informed workers’ representatives on issues related to social protection so they can play an active role in national and regional discussions related to the implementation of national social protection floors, and extension towards more comprehensive social security systems.
